The Prized Delight: Exploring Kurma Mabroom in Malaysia

Buah kurma

Most of the Mabroom that ends up on Malaysian tables passes through a wholesale carton first. This piece looks at the variety from that side: what you are actually buying when you order Kurma Mabroom in bulk, and what to settle with the supplier before any money moves. If you only want a box for the house, the Kurma Mabroom Malaysia range is the simpler route.

What Mabroom is

Mabroom is a Saudi date from the Madinah region. The fruit is long and slender, reddish-brown and semi-dry, with a chewy bite. It is not one of the very soft dates. That matters more to a bulk buyer than to anyone else, because a semi-dry date is easier to move, repack and hold than a moist one.

Malaysia has no commercial date-growing trade, so every carton of Mabroom here is imported. The carton label should name the variety, give Saudi Arabia as the country of origin and identify the importer. If a quote just says "kurma Saudi" with no variety, ask which one it is before you compare it with anything else.

Grades are the importer's own

Price lists often split Mabroom into A, AA, AAA or Jumbo. These are size sorts each importer sets for itself, with no international standard behind them, so one supplier's AA can be another's A. Compare quotes on net weight per carton, price per kilo, and a sample from the batch you would actually receive. Our note on date prices and grading systems in Malaysia shows how those lists are usually laid out.

Questions to settle before a bulk order

  • Is the price per kilo or per carton, and what is the net weight inside?
  • Is the packing date printed on the carton?
  • Will the whole order come from one batch, or could it be split across two?
  • If Mabroom runs short, will the supplier call you first, or quietly swap in another long Saudi date?

Get the answers in writing. A WhatsApp message counts. Mabroom and Safawi are both long Saudi dates, and in a rush month a substitution is easier to miss than you would think.

Timing the order

Date demand in Malaysia climbs ahead of Ramadan and stays high through it. Hari Raya, wedding hantaran, kenduri and umrah gifts add smaller peaks through the year. Gulf dates are mostly harvested from late summer into autumn, and new stock lands here some weeks after that. For a Ramadan order, talk to your supplier months ahead. In the last fortnight every wholesaler is quoting from the same tight stock.

Holding and repacking bulk stock

Keep unopened cartons sealed in a cool, dry store room. Once a carton is opened, reseal it or move the dates into airtight tubs so they don't pick up moisture or smells from the room. If you break cartons down into 500g or 1kg packs for resale, carry the variety name and "Saudi Arabia" over from the master carton onto every pack, along with the net weight. Customers read those labels more closely than most sellers expect.

Mabroom also mixes well with other stock. Put it on a tray next to Ajwa, which is small, roundish and near-black, and the buyer gets two clearly different dates in one box. Before Hari Raya a lot of shoppers go online to find beautifully arranged platters of dates, so a mixed tray is worth listing there too.

Start with one carton

For a first order with a new supplier, buy one carton, not ten. Weigh it against the invoice. Open it, check the label against what you ordered, and note the printed date. Then decide on volume. Our wholesale guide for traders, grocers and stockists covers the other first-order checks. When you know the variety, grade and kilos you need, get in touch with us for a written quote.
