Natural Colon Cleaning Remedies or a Whole-Food Week?

A "reset week" doesn't need a single pill or tea bag to work as a grocery exercise. Some natural colon cleaning remedies are sold as commercial programmes, so it's worth checking what the evidence says about them before building the simpler version at home.

What the evidence says about cleanses

The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) says only a small number of studies have looked at "detoxification" programmes in people, and that those studies have been of low quality. It cites a 2015 review that found no compelling research to support "detox" diets for weight management or for eliminating toxins from the body. The same page warns that colon cleansing procedures may have side effects, some of them serious.

So the honest aim of a reset week is ordinary: eat more fibre, drink enough, and make the week easy to stick to.

The grocery list

The list is short: vegetables that don't need much prep (carrots, cucumber, leafy greens), a couple of whole grains like oats or brown rice, a protein source, some dates, and enough water to actually finish the bottle each day.

There's a reason fibre and fluids sit at the centre. The NHS constipation page lists not eating enough fibre and not drinking enough fluids among the most common causes of constipation in adults. Its diet advice is to increase fibre gradually, add wheat bran, oats or linseed, and drink plenty of water and other fluids.

On amounts, the NHS page on water and drinks says the UK government's Eatwell Guide recommends 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day, and that you may need more in a hot environment or when physically active for long periods.

Batch the cooking, but not the rice

Batching matters more than the specific foods chosen. Cooking once and portioning food into containers removes the daily decision of what to eat, which is most of what makes a packaged programme feel easier in the first place.

Rice is the exception. UK government food-safety guidance says cooked rice should go in the fridge and be eaten within 24 hours, and that reheated rice can cause food poisoning if it was stored badly. Cook rice for the next day only, and batch the rest of the week's food around it.

Where dates fit

Dates are an easy way to add fibre. USDA FoodData Central lists Deglet Noor dates at 8.0g of dietary fibre per 100g.

Don't expect more of them than the research shows. A 2022 meta-analysis of fruit and functional constipation (Huo et al.) included 11 studies. In four trials, kiwifruit increased stool frequency significantly more than palm date or orange juice. The authors concluded that fruit intake may help relieve symptoms, and that larger studies are needed before firmer conclusions can be drawn.

Timing matters too. The NHS fibre page says dried fruit is sticky and can increase the risk of tooth decay, so it's better eaten as part of a meal than as a between-meal snack. A few dates chopped into the morning oats follow that advice better than a bag kept for the afternoon.

What this week is not

None of this is framed as a cure for anything. It's a shopping list, not a treatment. If you want to compare it with a kit on cost, add up the week's groceries and set the total against the kit's price.
