Honey & Beyond: Unveiling Kurma Madu’s Dates

Kurma Madu Malaysia

Ask a supplier for a pallet of "kurma madu" and you'll get very different answers depending on who's selling. Kurma Madu Malaysia uses the term as a shop name; further up the supply chain it isn't a spec anyone can order against, because "honey dates" describes texture, not a fixed variety, moisture percentage, or grade.

Why "madu" doesn't work as a purchase order

A wholesale order needs a variety name, a grade, and ideally a moisture range — that's what determines shelf life, weight loss in transit, and how the stock behaves once it's repacked into retail bags. "Madu" gives none of that. Two cartons both marketed as "kurma madu" can be completely different varieties with different handling needs, which is a problem once they're sitting in the same warehouse.

What buyers should ask for instead

Request the variety by name — Mazafati and Safawi are the two most commonly sold under a "honey date" banner because of their natural moisture, though texture still varies by harvest. Ask for the moisture percentage or at least a soft/semi-dry/dry classification, and the packing date. A supplier who can answer all three without hesitation is handling stock properly; one who only offers "our best honey dates" is selling on branding alone. Our grading and pricing guide breaks down how to read a supplier's spec sheet before committing to a volume order.

Repackaging risk

The "madu" label gets applied again at the repacking stage, sometimes by resellers with no direct relationship to the original grower. A standard dry-grade date can be glazed with sugar syrup to mimic the sheen of a naturally moist one, then sold on as premium stock. For a buyer moving volume, that's a margin problem as much as a quality one — glazed stock degrades differently in storage and doesn't hold up the way a genuinely moist date does.

Building a spec you can reuse

Once you know which variety and grade actually performs for your business, write it down as a standing spec and quote against it every time, instead of re-negotiating "honey dates" from scratch with each new supplier. Our notes on sourcing practices cover what else is worth asking a supplier before signing a standing order, and our wholesale guide for traders and stockists goes through order sizing and stock rotation in more detail.

The short version

"Kurma madu" is a fine name for a shop sign. It's not a purchase order. Buy by variety, grade, and moisture, and the honey-like texture will follow — or not — on its own merits.
