Put Ajwa next to Medjool, Safawi and Deglet Noor and the differences are obvious before you even taste them. Medjool is big, glossy and sticky-sweet. Deglet Noor is firmer, lighter in colour, less sweet. Safawi sits closer to Ajwa — dark, soft — but larger and a bit moister. Ajwa is the smallest of the four, dry to the touch, dense, with a flavour people usually describe as caramel with a slight bitterness at the edge.
How people actually eat it
Stuffed with a piece of almond or wrapped around a walnut, it's a common addition to a hantaran tray or a Raya cookie plate. Broken up over oatmeal or blended into a smoothie, it works as a sugar substitute without the granulated stuff. During Ramadan it's a standard iftar opener because it's small enough to eat one or two pieces without filling up before the actual meal.
Basic nutrition
Nutritionally it sits where you'd expect a dried date to sit: high in natural sugar, a fair amount of fibre, some potassium, magnesium and iron. There isn't a compound in Ajwa that puts it in a different category from Safawi or Sukkari — the appeal is taste, texture and, for a lot of buyers, its religious association with Madinah.
About the bigger health claims
That religious association is also where the cholesterol, fertility and "protection from black magic" claims come from — they get repeated as fact online but aren't supported by real clinical evidence. Treat Ajwa as a good date to eat, not medicine. See a doctor for actual health problems.
Storage
An airtight container keeps it fine at room temperature for a couple of weeks, longer in the fridge (3-8°C). Freeze it if you've bought in bulk for a wedding or a festive season — it holds up well past a year that way.
