Business Strategies In A Economic Downturn – Reduced Lying Fruit

Boxes of wholesale kurma stacked ready for consolidated order

A downturn is when supplier terms matter more than the headline price

When buyers cut back, most wholesalers respond by chasing a lower price per carton. That helps once. A better lever, and one that keeps helping every order after, is the terms you buy under — order size, payment window, and how many separate purchases you're making from the same supplier.

Combine smaller orders into fewer, larger ones

Placing five separate small orders across a quarter usually costs more per kilo than one consolidated order of the same total volume — freight is charged per shipment, not per kilo, and most suppliers only unlock their better price bracket above a set carton count. Map your next quarter's needs by grade first, then place one order instead of four.

Ask for payment terms before you ask for a discount price

A supplier who won't move on price will often move on when payment is due. 30 or 45-day terms free up cash that would otherwise sit in prepaid stock, which matters more in a downturn than a few ringgit off the carton. Ask for terms first; price negotiation goes further once that's settled.

One steady supplier beats shopping every batch around

Switching suppliers for a marginally better quote each time forfeits the volume-loyalty pricing that builds up over repeat orders, and it means re-negotiating terms from zero every time. Staying with one reliable supplier through a slow quarter usually costs less over the year than chasing the lowest quote batch by batch.

Size the order to what you can move before the next harvest

Buying big to hit a price break only pays off if the stock sells before quality drops. Check your actual sell-through rate by grade before committing to a larger order — a cheaper price per kilo on stock that sits unsold for months costs more than a smaller order at a slightly higher rate.
