5 Yummy Picnic Dessert Recipes

Kid-friendly date desserts packed for a family picnic

Picnics with kids come with their own rules: nothing too messy, nothing that needs a knife, and ideally something that survives being dropped once. Dates are forgiving on all three counts — they're already portioned by hand, they don't crumble like cake, and a rinse gets rid of most spills. These five are built with that in mind.

Date and cornflake clusters

Melt dates down into a paste with a splash of water, stir through crushed cornflakes until coated, and spoon into small mounds on baking paper to set. Kids can help with the spooning part, and there's no oven involved, so it's a reasonable one to make together the day before.

Banana and date mini muffins

These do need baking, so make them the night before. Mash ripe banana with chopped dates, fold into a basic muffin batter, and bake in a mini muffin tray for about 12 minutes. They're less sweet than a shop-bought muffin because the dates carry most of the sweetness, and they hold up fine in a lunchbox.

Date and orange energy balls

Blend pitted dates with a little orange zest and a squeeze of the juice, roll into balls, and chill. The citrus keeps them from tasting one-note sweet, which matters if a child is eating three or four in one sitting. No coating needed — they're dry enough on the outside to pick up without sticking to fingers too much.

Frozen grape and date skewers

Thread frozen grapes and pitted dates alternately onto small skewers or toothpicks. Pack them in an insulated bag with a small ice pack — they'll thaw over the course of the picnic but stay cool enough to be a genuinely refreshing option on a hot day, which none of the other four really are.

Date-stuffed flatbread rolls

Spread a thin layer of date paste on a small flatbread or tortilla, roll tightly, and slice into pinwheels. It reads more like a snack than a dessert, but it's the easiest of the five to eat one-handed while still standing up, which counts for something at a picnic with young kids running around.

A quick note on quantity: dates are more filling than they look, so two or three pieces per recipe per child is usually plenty — pack a smaller batch of each rather than a large amount of one. For stock that's soft enough to blend or stuff without extra soaking, see our dates fruit range or the pemborong kurma selection for bulk packs.
